Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
Specialized therapy for OCD
What is Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)?
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a condition characterized by recurring, unwanted thoughts, images, urges, or doubts that create significant distress, anxiety, or uncertainty. These experiences, known as obsessions, feel intrusive and difficult to dismiss, even when a person recognizes that these fears may be exaggerated or unlikely.
In response to these distressing thoughts and feelings, individuals with OCD often engage in compulsions. Compulsions are repetitive behaviors or mental rituals intended to reduce anxiety, prevent a feared outcome, or create a sense of certainty. These neutralizing acts are attempts to eliminate or reduce distress, uncertainty, or perceived danger. Common compulsions may include checking, washing, counting, researching, seeking reassurance, avoiding triggers, reviewing memories, thought-control strategies, or repeating actions until they feel “just right.”
While compulsions may provide temporary relief, they often strengthen the OCD cycle over time. The more a person relies on compulsions to reduce anxiety, the more frequently obsessions tend to return, creating a pattern that can become increasingly disruptive to daily life.
Common OCD themes include:
- Contamination fears and cleaning rituals
- Checking behaviors
- Harm OCD
- Health-related obsessions
- Relationship OCD (ROCD)
- Scrupulosity and religious concerns
- Perfectionism and “just right” experiences
- Intrusive sexual thoughts
- Intrusive violent thoughts
- Mental compulsions and rumination
- Reassurance-seeking behaviors
- Fear of making mistakes or causing harm
Therapy for OCD
Therapy for OCD focuses on helping individuals understand the relationship between obsessions, anxiety/distress, and compulsions while developing healthier ways of responding to uncertainty and distress. Through evidence-based approaches, clients learn to reduce compulsive behaviors, increase tolerance for uncertainty, and regain freedom from patterns that keep OCD active.
At Gleason Counseling Services, we specialize in the treatment of OCD, with extensive training and experience in Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), two of the most research-supported and effective treatments for OCD. We would be honored to help you break free from OCD’s grip and reclaim the time, energy, and peace of mind it has taken from your life.
