EMDR Therapy

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a research-supported therapy that helps your brain naturally heal from distressing experiences. Rather than only managing symptoms, EMDR works to address the root of the emotional pain. As painful memories are processed through EMDR, they become less overwhelming, allowing you to respond to life with greater peace and emotional freedom.

EMDR has been shown to be effective for treating trauma, anxiety, panic attacks, depression, grief, relationship difficulties, negative self-beliefs, and many other concerns. With EMDR we will talk about your experiences, but the goal isn’t to repeatedly relive painful memories. Instead, we’ll help your brain do what it was designed to do—heal by tapping into your body’s “adaptive information processing” in a relatively brief time.

One of the unique parts of EMDR is Bilateral Stimulation (BLS). Bilateral simply means “both sides.” During EMDR therapy, we will guide you through a gentle back-and-forth pattern, such as moving your eyes from side to side, listening to alternating tones through headphones, or you’ll lightly tap the left and right sides of your body. Studies show that BLS helps your brain process “stuck” memories, so instead of difficult experiences being emotionally intense like the day they happened, BLS through EMDR activates your brain to process those memories and sort them in healthy ways. The memory doesn’t disappear, but it no longer feels vivid, present-day, or debilitating.

Throughout EMDR, you remain awake, aware, and in control. You can pause at any time, ask questions, or let us know what you’re experiencing. At Gleason Counseling Services, we want to ensure you experience EMDR treatment at a pace that feels safe and manageable. We are amazed at how quickly EMDR works and how long lasting the results are.
